The VSX817S's Pioneer Hybrid Amplifier design is a unique structure to reduce the distortion caused by the dynamic change of heat in the system. Temperature is a key factor since heat directly affects the amount of bias required by an output transistor to reproduce sound. A thermal compensation transistor provides transistor temperature feedback to the bias circuit, ensuring that the correct amount of bias is applied to the transistors, regardless of temperature. Moreover, to enhance dissipation of heat, the output transistor's Thermal Compensation Circuits are all mounted to the same portion of the heat sink. The advantages are thorough reduction of the distortion by controlling bias current quickly in accordance with the change of the power transistor temperature and an ultra short signal path by integrating major parts of the power amplification stage.

It's called the Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System, or MCACC, and it works in any room regardless of shape or size. Automatic MCACC set-up uses a microphone to monitor a room's acoustic environment, then determines the size and number of speakers, as well as channel level and listener-to-speaker distances. The VSX817S even has a 5-band equalizer for more precise adjustment. With MCACC, you can have the ultimate home entertainment system--one that's customized for your own home.

In addition to the more traditional surround sound formats, the VSX817S offers new Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Pro Logic IIx for 7.1-channel playback of traditional stereo and 5.1/6.1-channel content. It can apply Dolby Digital EX and DTS-ES decoding to 6.1-channel output, and its DTS NEO:6 capability can produce 6.1-channel surround from 2-channel sources. Pioneer's exclusive DSP technology lets you experience movies and music as never before. There are 14 Advanced Surround modes, including Front Stage Surround Advance. Virtual Surround Back mode deepens and broadens the sound stage by creating a phantom rear surround effect without using a surround back speaker. Quality Connections

The input terminals on the VSX817S are configured for 7.1-channel processing of DTS-ES, DTS, Dolby Digital, and other multi-channel sources such as DVD-Audio and SACD. To enjoy cinema-quality sound, just connect a Pioneer DVD player and surround system speakers and you're ready. For CD-R/RW, MD, and other recording media, this receiver has two each digital coaxial and optical audio inputs. You also get three component video inputs and one output to maintain the signal integrity from such digital sources as DVD and DTV. S-Video and composite connections are included as well.

XM Or SIRIUS? Now You Can Choose

XM or SIRIUS? SIRIUS or XM? There was a time when the manufacturer of your A/V receiver determined which satellite radio service would be compatible. Not any more! Pioneer's VSX817S receiver is compatible with both XM and SIRIUS. XM delivers over 170 channels of music (including 69 commercial-free channels), news, sports, talk, comedy, and children's programming. There are even select channels broadcasting in XM-HD Surround 5.1-channel audio. To hear XM you'll need the optional XM Mini-Tuner and XM Mini-Tuner Home Dock, or the older XM Connect & Play tuner/antenna (none of which is included). SIRIUS brings you over 130 channels with all music channels commercial free.
