Features

Multi-Format Player: The Yamaha DVD-S2500 is a universal player, which offers playback of the ultra high-resolution multi-channel audio formats SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) and DVD-Audio. Both, with their wide frequency responses, capture subtle details that make music sound richer and more real.

Multi-channel DVD-Audio Playback: DVD-Audio is a multi-channel format used for high resolution recording supporting up to six channels of PCM audio. This unit can decode and play DVD-Audio discs with a sampling rate up to 192 kHz with a 24-bit word length. Many DVD-Audio discs also offer photo galleries, artist biographies, lyrics, etc to accompany the music.

SACD: Unlike PCM based technology (CD, MiniDisc, DVD, DVD Audio, etc.), Super Audio CD is based on Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding, which does not require decimation and interpolation filters. DSD is much simpler and enables a 1-bit signal to be recorded directly. DSD encodes music at 2,822,400 samples per second (64 times that of standard CD) allowing you to hear sound with incredible detail and clarity. DSD combines the advantages of digital recording with the best characteristics of analog sound. The DVD-S2500 will play 2-channel and multi-channel Super Audio CDs recorded on single layer, dual layer, and hybrid discs. During SACD playback, neither the optical digital nor coaxial digital outputs operate. Either the analog outputs or the i.LINK (IEEE 1394) outputs must be used to listen to SACDs.

Disc Compatibility: The DVD-S2500 can play pre-recorded DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), Audio CD, Video CD, and Super Video CD discs. Additionally it is compatible with recordings on DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. MP3 and JPEG files recorded on CD-R or CD-RW are also supported.

Video Circuit: The DVD-S2500 uses 12-bit/216 MHz video D/A converters to ensure highly accurate playback of delicate, low-level video signals and give you a vivid picture that is faithful in every detail.

Audio Processing: This unit uses 24-bit/192 kHz audio D/A converters to maintain extraordinary sound quality. It has built-in Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, and MPEG decoders along with the 5.1-channel analog outputs for DVD-Audio and SACD. There is also an Audio Direct mode which turns off all the video circuitry, so it doesn't generate any noise when you want the highest possible audio quality.

HDMI Output: The HDMI output simplifies A/V connections by carrying uncompressed SD or HD digital video and up to 8 channels of digital audio all in one cable. It conforms to HDCP copyright protection technology, and must be connected to an HDCP-compliant device with an HDMI or DVI (with adapter) input. The DVD-S2500 features a built-in high quality video scaler that is capable of outputting video signals in a variety of formats. You can select the HDMI output as 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, or Auto (automatically set to match the monitor). The audio portion of the HDMI output must be turned off if you're using the optical or coaxial digital output, if the HDMI audio output is turned on, the other two are muted.

i.LINK: The DVD-S2500 has two audio i.LINK connections, used for high quality audio sources. When connecting to a DTCP (Digital Transmission Content Protection) compliant i.LINK input, DVD-Audio and SACD audio signals can be transferred digitally.

DCDi By Faroudja: The DVD-S2500's progressive scan output is powered by Faroudja's DCDi (Directional Correction De-interlacing) engine for the finest processing of film, video, graphics, or mixed-mode content.

NTSC/PAL Compatible: The monitor type can be set to NTSC, PAL, or Auto. If you have an NTSC TV, set the output to NTSC and PAL discs will be converted. The Auto setting switches the output to NTSC or PAL depending upon the original signal on the disc loaded.

DVD Video Mode: Because some DVD-Audio discs have a DVD-Video section, this player gives you the option of specifying the DVD-Video mode.

Picture Quality Adjustments: The DVD-S2500 allows you to adjust numerous picture settings individually, including chroma delay, gamma, contrast, brightness, and sharpness.

Digital Audio Output: Depending on the input capability of your pre-amp, set the digital output to 48kHz or 96kHz. When playing copyright-protected PCM signals, the digital output is automatically down-converted to 48kHz.

Bass Management: When using the 5.1-channel analog outputs you can tailor the frequency, level, and delay to the bass handling capabilities and configuration of your speaker system. The front, center, and surround speakers can be set to Large or Small. The center and surround speakers can also be set to Off. The subwoofer is set to On or Off. The distance from the listening position is set for the front, center, and rear speakers. You can also adjust the relative output level for each speaker.

Karaoke: You can play multi-channel karaoke DVDs with the karaoke channels mixed into normal stereo.

Clear Voice: Clear voice increases the relative volume of dialog for easy listening at night (only available for certain multi-channel discs).

Night Mode: The dynamic range is lowered in night mode, for listening at night without the loud peaks (compatible with Dolby Digital soundtracks only).

3D Sound: In a system without rear speakers 3D Sound remixes the six channels of digital surround (except SACD and PCM signals with sampling over 88.2 MHz) into two analog outputs while retaining all the original audio information. The result is the sensation of being surrounded by multiple speakers.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 format. The player can recognize eight levels of nested directories, album numbers up to 99, and track numbers up to 999. The unit also recognizes ID3 tags and will display then on the screen.

JPEG Playback: This unit will play JPEG still image files recorded onto a CD-R, CD-RW, or commercial CD using the ISO 9660 format. The player can recognize eight levels of nested directories, roll numbers up to 99, and picture numbers up to 999. JPEG files can be displayed one at a time or as a slideshow with picture durations of approximately 2, 5, or 8 seconds. You can also rotate images in 90° steps (rotation not available during slide show).

Resume Play Function: This function allows you to resume DVD playback at the point where you left off for the last five DVDs you've played.

Slow Motion Speeds: When playing a disc with video content, you can move forward or backward through the program in one of three slow-motion speeds (1/8x, 1/4x, and 1/2x). You can also play at normal speed in reverse.

Scanning Speeds: There are two fast forward and reverse scanning speeds, 4x and 32x for video discs and 4x and 8x for audio discs.

Zoom: During video playback, you can enlarge the picture by 2x, 4x, or 8x. You can then use the cursor buttons to move the enlarged viewing area up, down, left, or right.

Program Playback: You can create a playlist of up to 20 video chapters or audio tracks to playback in the order you like.

Parental Control: This unit allows you to set playback restrictions for DVDs. You can select a parental control rating level from 0 to 8, which is protected by a 4-digit password. For unrated material, up to 120 discs can be individually locked, requiring a password for playback.

Wake-up Timer: The DVD-S2500 has a wake-up timer. Adjust the timer to start playback after a specified amount of time, up to 600 minutes.

Sleep Timer: If the player is stopped and no functions are keyed for 20 minutes, it will turn off automatically.

Display Dimming: The unit's display can be adjusted in 3 steps.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface): Output digital video and multi-channel audio using one cable.

Component Video Output: The DVD-S2500 features a component video output, capable of passing a progressive scan signal or an interlaced video signal. If the component output is to be used, the HDMI output must be turned off.

Composite/S-Video: For connecting to TVs with only composite or S-Video inputs, this unit provides one composite video and one S-Video output jack.

i.LINK: High quality audio can be output through one of the i.LINK connections, S400 transfer speed.

Digital Audio Outputs: This unit features two digital audio outputs, one optical and one coaxial. These can be connected to an A/V receiver, amplifier, surround decoder (Dolby Digital, DTS), or other component.

5.1-Channel Audio Outputs: The DVD-S2500 offers multi-channel analog output for DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and SACD playback.

2-Channel Audio Outputs: In addition to the 5.1-channel analog outputs, the unit features a stereo audio output for connecting to a stereo analog input on a TV or receiver. Even when the source audio is multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, DVD-Audio, SACD), these jacks will output a down-mixed 2-channel signal.

Remote: 3.5mm jacks are included for remote input and remote output, for use with other compatible Yamaha components.

RS-232C Port: Connects to the RS-232 port on a compatible external controller, allowing control of this player using outboard remote systems.
